CHICKEN ENTREPRENEUR An Owner of Slow but Steady Business
Chicken entrepreneur, you might get confused by what is written. As the name suggest, it has NOTHING to do with
chicken. Yes, probably the origin of term ‘chicken entrepreneur’ might have started at a time when plenty of
would-be investors were offered for fried chicken franchises as remunerative side businesses. Investors in these
fast foods might not have required quitting their regular jobs. A fried chicken entrepreneur might have had devoted
few hours a week for supervising and promoting their businesses.
Here, what we talk about chicken entrepreneur has nothing to do with selling chickens! In reality, a chicken
entrepreneur is one who pursues another business while maintaining a full time job in her or his chosen field. This
can be termed as side business. Usually, the side business is related to the talent and type of the job one is
doing. For instance, a tax accountant in a large corporation will be choosing to have private tax preparation
business or legal tax advisor. This will run on either weekends or in the nights when duty hours are over. Another
example for this is any chef of five star restaurants may go for his own bistro on the side keeping some people as
employees.
One of the positive aspects of being a chicken entrepreneur is getting safe funds. With your original job, you
are secure of getting funds regularly and on the other hand you develop your small scale business with your
visionary. You can also implement the marketing strategies of your company into your own business. One side you
learn from the job and on another side, you put it into your business to make it successful. You can also follow
same strategies which your company has been following and has become one of the giant in business. It may not be
possible in terms of money your company puts, but you can have same idea with less funds to put into your own
business.
Chicken entrepreneur is termed as entrepreneur because a person doing the side business has an idea to develop
his or her business in a unique way. Chicken entrepreneurs are more responsible than entrepreneurs as they will
have to think about both; their jobs during weekdays or duty hours and their own businesses during weekends or off
the duty hours. The responsibility of the chicken entrepreneur doubles, and so their income does. Once the side
business starts getting developed, then and only then would chicken entrepreneur will consider quitting her or his
primary source of income i.e. job.
There are lot many advantages to remain chicken entrepreneur rather than being a small business owner. According
to Small Business Association, half of the small business or small scale businesses fail within a year by doing
nothing other than the losing funds. When these businesses are started, there is no other source of income and the
funds are invested fully to run them. Top of that, there will be loan to pay on monthly basis. These businesses,
often fail to compete the market because of tough competition and market trend without funds. More alarming
statistics is an estimation of 90-95% failure rates for small businesses within five years of their
establishment.
